Lieutenant Commander Marvin Whiting

Chaplain Whiting was born in Montgomery, AL.  He received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Theology with a Minor in Psychology from Oakwood University in Huntsville, AL in 1990.    

 

In 1995 Chaplain Whiting completed his Masters of Divinity studies at Andrews University Theological Seminary in Berrien Springs, MI and was commissioned an Ensign Chaplain Candidate in U.S. Navy Chaplain Corps. As a Chaplain Candidate he received his initial training as a Reservist at Navy Training Center (NTC) San Diego, CA and the 1st Force Service Support Group Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base, CA.  In 2001 he graduated Chaplain Corps Basic Course School at Naval Education and Training Center (NETC) Newport, RI.  

Chaplain Whiting has served as a pastor in the Seventh-day Adventist Church for 21 years.  He has served as a pastor in the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Florida.   His pastoral skill produced an increase in membership and overall church improvement.   Other contributions are; active in community service and community development, leader of a city wide pastor alliance, president of a non-profit community development program, church school board, and a gospel radio host.

As a Reserve Chaplain for 17 years, Chaplain Whiting has served several different Commands contributing to resilience of Marines and Sailors and their families.  A few of his tours include; Chaplain for MAG-26 Forward ministering to over 5000 Marines, Soldiers and Sailors in Iraq, Regional Operations Chaplain for Mid-West Region assisting and training Chaplains for crisis operations, and Chaplain for Navy Mobilization Processing Site counseling and facilitating for mobilizing and demobilizing military personnel.

Chaplain Whiting is committed to enriching the lives of others and empowering them to achieve their best.  He has accomplished this through counseling and advising individuals, couples, families, and groups regarding a wide range of issues.  His certifications include: PREPARE/ENRICH Premarital Counselor, Rational Emotive Spiritual Therapy (R.E.S.T) Faith Counselor, Financial Peace Counselor, Life Coach,  Certified Personal Fitness Trainer, Certified Fitness Nutrition Coach, Suicide Prevention, Anger Management, and NAD Health Summit Training for Divorce and Grief Recovery.

 

Chaplain Whiting is married to the former Alice Acevedo and has 4 adult daughters and 3 grandchildren.   

Since 2013 he has served on active duty as Command Chaplain for the 9th Marine Corps District (9MCD) Great Lake, IL, Destroyer Squadron 9 Everett, WA, Director of CREDO, Jacksonville, FL and currently serves as Chaplain for the 2nd Maintenance Battalion Camp Lejeune, NC.
